I love the dhow. It’s the culprit behind all the rich, centuries-long cultural mixing from Tanzania to Yemen to Iran to India. And I love the fact it still coexists with those tall buildings in the background, which are somewhere north of Dar es Salaam.
It’s as if I were there–heat and salt smells. Beautiful.
In 1985 I traveled from Mombassa to Lamu on a dhow with sailors who sang songs about a giant who sailed on a huge dhow. It took a couple of days and walking on land felt so strange when I arrived. After that I took a tiny motor boat from Lamu to Kismayo and it was not the same thing at all. Wonderful journeys. I remember them so well.
Beautiful, Ben.
Anya, that is so cool. I wonder if it’s still possible to take such a trip…
Kathy and Joe, glad you liked it!
